This elaborate sideboard, finished in a rich red lacquer with striking dark images, would bring a touch of luxury to any room. Originating from Gansu province in western China, the intricate paintings of flowers and vases on the front would most likely have been adorned with gold, but have now worn down to the darker base colour. While only the centre doors were originally present, the outer doors have been added using the original fixed panels. The red lacquer finish is original and now worn in sections to show the wood beneath, but has been restored with a new varnish to deepen the colour, creating a luxurious feel while keeping the sideboard's distinctive character. The old hardware has been lost, replaced with new handles and door plates in keeping with the original look. A wonderful, unique piece that would add colour and character to any setting.
