Shanxi Painted Furniture

Shanxi Painted Furniture

Our Shanxi furniture range is exclusive to Shimu and comprises beautiful cabinets that are finished in either a red, cream or black lacquer and decorated with gold leaf. Each piece is individually painted by hand in classic designs from Shanxi province - a region famous in China for the quality and beauty of its furniture.

Furniture from the Shanxi region has been celebrated for centuries, with its painstaking and time-consuming lacquering techniques such as the 'push-light lacquer', producing a superior smooth glossy finish and the bright colours that are often found on Shanxi furniture.

Shanxi furniture - from history to modern times

Whilst we've faithfully reproduced the style and look of Shanxi furniture in this beautiful modern range, much of the antique Chinese furniture seen today was originally made in Shanxi. Furniture from the Shanxi region has a reputation for being very well made, which could be why so many have survived the centuries and remained available to admire in such great condition. It isn’t just the original pieces that have lasted well though; the simple, clean lines and fine craftmanship of the red and black lacquered and decorated cabinets are timeless, and the appeal of the Shanxi style of furniture has endured to modern times.
