Anhui, circa 1850

Beautifully hand-crafted from pine and beech wood, this intricate marriage bed fascia would be a real talking point in a modern home. It originates from southern China - either Anhui or Jiangsu province, with wonderful carvings in deep relief set within symmetrical, geometric patterns. The five main upper carvings show various characters and scenes from Chinese mythology - two figures on horseback with their servants following, a bearded character holding a 'fuchen' whip amongst them. These are beautifully detailed and now aged in subtle contrast with the background rather than in more vibrant colours.

The base of each side section has a square shaped panel carved against a red background and framed in black, showing a single flower stem. Again, the red would once have been far more vivid when the bed was first made but the more muted tones blend nicely today with the paler wood surround. A wonderful, rare and original piece that could be used today as a unique headboard or as an eye-catching wall feature.
