The finish and paintings on this brightly decorated cabinet are all old, in colours that are typical of Tibetan furniture. The door panels are decorated with peony flowers surrounding longevity symbols and there are other floral motifs on the outer frames and lower panels. The upper and lower left hand panels are fixed, while the right and centre panels are doors that open to upper and lower compartments.

Cabinets like this one were usually used in Tibet for holding religious scrolls or documents as well as ceremonial robes and valuables. They were normally produced from pine or sometimes cedar and were quite rudimentary - often produced by monks. Tibetan furniture in the original finish and with old paintings like this cabinet is now quite rare, with most pieces seen on the market these days being twentieth century reproductions or in some cases old pieces with newly applied paintings. This one is therefore quite a collector's item.
