Four Panel Screen with Flower Vase Carvings

This wonderfully carved screen is made of of four hinged panels, made from elder wood in Jiangsu province, southeast China towards the end of the nineteenth century. Lower level screens like this were used in ladies' quarters of the home, used as 'modesty boards' to hide exposed ankles and petticoats. The main central carvings on each panel show vases holding bouquets of flowers - a common theme for this type of piece as they were associated with femininity. The bottom panels are in relief carving, again showing various flowers.

The carvings show a wonderful level of skill, with the main sections formed in a highly intricate scrolling pattern with flowers weaving in and out. The screen would certainly have been made for a household of considerable wealth. Today it would make a lovely divider to section off part of a room or use it in a bedroom as a dressing screen.
