Crafted from beech wood and showcasing ornate geometric patterns, this distinct arched panel once formed part of a traditional Chinese four-poster marriage bed. Preserved as a single separate unit, it could today function as an unconventional headboard, as a frame for a television or simply as a stunning statement piece to stand alone on a wall.

The top of the panel is composed of intersecting elements created with individually joined, beaded and mitered pieces of wood. These are punctuated across the top by detailed panels in carved relief, depicting various figures or scenes from Chinese literature or legend.

The most impressive decoration is reserved for the distinctive round frames at the base of each side of the panel. Each of these is carved in deep relief on several levels, giving a three dimensional feel. These carvings show detailed battle scenes, with figures on horseback, on foot or in boats carrying swords and spears and engaged in combat. Each scene is set against a red background - once more vivid and providing a greater contrast but now worn to softer, more natural colours that blend together with the surround. These carvings are exquisitely worked and would have taken a huge amount of time and skill to produce.

A rare, highly unusual piece that offers a versatile architectural feature and eye-catching talking point for any interior.
