This charming side cabinet is constructed from poplar wood and displays a classic design commonly seen in storage units from the eastern region of Gansu province in the northwest of China. Originally intended for storing grain, the cabinet has been repurposed as a modern storage unit by downsizing a larger piece and adding a door in the front, updating the original fixed panel. Its original design would have been accessed by removing a lid on the top, which has now been sealed.

This painted cabinet is in typical colours for the region, with the thick frames and top surface in black lacquer and the door and carved bottom apron in red. The front of the door is decorated with a central rectangle in cream, adorned with paintings of flowers in blues, reds and greens. As time has passed, the colours have softened to give the cabinet an aged, more muted look that would complement any space. With a single removable shelf inside, the cabinet would provide unique storage in a bedroom or living room.
