This is a lovely example of the heavily carved coffers and tables produced in the central province of Shaanxi. The chest would have been used as a storage coffer for holding valuables, with the drawers able to be locked using the long iron handles. The five drawers are each decorated with deep carvings in floral patterns, with a large circular rosette set centrally on the middle, full width drawer.

The profile of the chest tapers upwards slightly, with the legs recessed under an extended top that would have provided a display surface for ancestor offerings. Like most of the furniture from Shaanxi - at least the pieces that have survived - the chest is made from elm wood, with its attractive wide grain showing through the worn black lacquer top. With a presence and aura that comes with its age, this chest would make a wonderful accent piece in any room, with plenty of storage in the five drawers.
